BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- This week, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will conduct specialized explosives training for bomb sniffing dogs of the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) Police Department. The MTA Police Department is an integral part of the mass transportation effort and is responsible for protecting all properties, platforms, tracks and surroundings, as well as storage and maintenance facilities designated by the MTA.
Canine trainers and forensic chemists from ATF will conduct the National Odor Recognition Training program that "imprints" the basic explosives compounds on the MTA's explosives detection canines during the three day training session in the Bronx. Specialized imprinting will also be conducted with regards to peroxide-based explosives. Approximately 35 MTA explosives detection canines and their handlers will undergo the training and testing. An additional 15 canines from other state and local law enforcement agencies will also be imprinted. ATF will offer the media a chance to see a demonstration of the MTA handlers and dogs in action and address any questions regarding ATF's explosives canine training program.
