MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Top canine sports athletes from across the U.S. will compete April 22-24 at the Spring Festival of Dog Agility(R), a championship qualifying event co-hosted by the United States Dog Agility Association and the City of Myrtle Beach.
"Dog agility is for anyone who enjoys dogs, whether you watch or participate," says Kenneth Tatsch, president and founder of the USDAA. "It is a rapidly growing activity for pet owners who not only want to engage in athletic competition, but for those who want to spend quality time with their pets -- an objective of USDAA's mission to promote responsible pet ownership."
Dogs of all sizes and breeds, including mixed-breeds, leap over hurdles, race across narrow ramps, blast through wind-sock tunnels, and weave between poles like a slalom skier led by their owners as they vie to advance in three separate international championship tournaments in individual and team competition at the event.
A standard agility course features 20 obstacles spread over about 180 yards. Most competitive dogs, guided by their handlers running on course with them, cover such distances in 50 seconds or less.
The Spring Festival of Dog Agility features qualifying heats for USDAA's Grand Prix of Dog Agility(R) World Championships as well as USDAA's rapidly growing Dog Agility Masters(R) Three-Dog International Team Championships and $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase(R), a speed jumping championship event for dogs.
The top dogs competing in Myrtle Beach can advance to one of six Regional Championships to be held later this spring and summer on the road to the world championships in November. See http://www.usdaa.com/ for more information on USDAA and dog agility.
