'Miracle' Dog Corky Recovers From After 44 Days Lost in Forest
MENDOCINO, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Corky, the Portuguese Water Dog who survived 44 cold, rainy winter days lost in the Van Damme State Forest in Mendocino County, has finally recovered from his ordeal, owner Susan Strom reported this week.
Corky, the "inn dog" at Susan and Richard Strom's Whitegate Inn in the village of Mendocino, disappeared Nov. 3, 2005 near the Pygmy Forest in Van Damme State Park during a hike with Richard. Despite search and rescue efforts involving road crews, cable company repairmen, mushroom pickers, park rangers, volunteer fire fighters and hundreds of friends and well-wishers in the community, no one could find Corky. Corky is a Portuguese Water Dog descended from an ancient breed once used by fisherman in Portugal to herd fish into nets and carry messages between boats.
On Dec. 16, 2005, Corky -- his once silky coat thin and dry and his body weight down 26 pounds (from 65 pounds) -- finally came out of the forest onto a country road where a motorist rescued him. He was found about a mile from where he disappeared.
"Covered with 300 ticks and several big superficial wounds, Corky was weak and severely malnourished," recalls Susan Strom. "How he survived all that time in a area known for mountain lions with little or no food in the terribly stormy winter, we'll never know. Rehabilitation has taken months, but we're happy to report that he is finally at his normal weight and strength. He also is back at the inn greeting guests."
"Locals call him Corky, the miracle dog," says Strom, who was so moved by the community outpouring for her beloved animal, she joined the local volunteer fire department as a way to give back to the community.
