Veterinarians See Improvement With New Diet

ST. LOUIS, MO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 11/16/2005 -- For dogs experiencing joint mobility issues, your veterinarian now has a diet that promotes joint health and mobility.

Nine out of 10 veterinarians participating in a recent in-clinic feeding trial using Purina Veterinary Diets® JM Joint Mobility™ brand Canine Formula described positive changes in the condition of dogs fed the diet. The study, which involved 146 dogs, measured patient response as interpreted by both veterinarians and owners over a two-month period. (1)

After only two months of JM use by the dogs in the trial, 91 percent of veterinarians said they would recommend JM based on the improvements they observed in the dogs. Reported changes in mobility included improvements in walking, rising from a sitting or lying position, running, and using stairs. In addition, 90 percent of dog owners said they are likely to continue feeding JM.

How joint mobility issues can affect dogs

It is estimated that as many as one in five dogs older than 1 year of age currently have joint mobility issues such as stiffness and reduced flexibility(2). JM contains high levels of long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids to help support joint health and mobility, according to Dr. Brian Beale, an orthopedic specialist at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston.

JM's unique blend of nutrients also includes high levels of antioxidants and a natural source of glucosamine for promotion of healthy cartilage and joints. Paying close attention to body language or subtle behavior changes in a dog can give veterinarians important clues to a dog's condition. Beale recommends every dog owner let their veterinarian know if their dog:

-- Has a hard time getting up in the morning or after lying down for a
rest
-- Appears stiff after exercise
-- Tires easily or lags behind on walks
-- Is reluctant to climb steps or jump up

"While it's important to avoid unnecessary stress on aging joints, regular exercise should be a key part of managing joint mobility issues," Beale says.
"Staying active through appropriate activities is one of the keys to slowing the progression of joint deterioration," says Beale. "The stronger the muscles and tissue around the joints, the better they protect the joints."
