Greyhounds Hang Up Their Muzzles and Seek Adoptive Homes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Greyhounds are hanging up their racing muzzles and looking for a home on someone's couch. To qualify as an adopter, one only needs to be willing to be loved unconditionally by their new greyhound pet.

As greyhounds finish their racing careers, racetrack officials and adoption groups work together to find people wishing to adopt the former racers as pets. While there always are greyhounds available for adoption, due to unanticipated seasonal track closings, there is a larger number of greyhounds available for adoption this year. Pet adoption groups are seeking homes for 400 of these wonderful dogs.

"I can't think of a better way to bring cheer into a home for the holidays than to adopt a greyhound," said Rory Goree, president of Greyhound Pets of America (GPA), the largest greyhound adoption organization. "Greyhounds make wonderful pets. We have a saying among those who have adopted greyhounds: they're like potato chips, you can't have just one."

Today, there are more than 180,000 greyhound pets in North America. People who adopt greyhounds tend to socialize with other adopters and participate in a number of social and educational events.

Greyhounds placed through adoption programs are generally between 18 months and four years old. They are intelligent, quiet, clean and gentle, and adapt easily to their new home environment. They are eager to please and respond positively to attention.

"Despite perceptions to the contrary, greyhounds do not need a great deal of space to run," Goree said. "Like any dog, they do need exercise, but when they are inside the house, they enjoy curling up on a soft blanket."

Because greyhounds spend their racing lives in the company of other greyhounds, trainers and handlers, their sociability generally makes them great with other pets. Greyhounds are extremely well mannered and their temperament makes them wonderful around children.

Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation founded in 1987 for the purpose of finding homes for ex-racing greyhounds and educating the public on the suitability and availability of greyhounds as pets. At the end of 2003, GPA placed more than 60,000 greyhounds in homes as pets. GPA has more than 10,000 members and 47 chapters across the country.
