Hopalong Heads California Animal Rescue Effort for Victims of Hurricane Katrina

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Hopalong Animal Rescue in Oakland, CA. is heading a California Animal Rescue effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina. They are working in collaboration with the Humane Society of the United States in trying to get the much needed help to the animals left homeless and in desperate situations.

Hopalong is looking for donations in the form of supplies and money. Funds raised will help send a team of dedicated volunteers directly to the sites needed and will be used to transport, care for and re-home animals that can't be reunited with their families. There they will provide hands on care to the animals and when necessary transport elsewhere for adoption or foster care. People who are interested in volunteering for the rescue should have experience with handling animals, be in good health and be available to stay at the sites for a week or longer.

At this time, Hopalong is lining up foster homes in the Bay Area for displaced dogs and cats. The intention would be to either re-unite them with their families once settled, or place them in new adoptive homes. We may also need volunteers to transport animals across the country and vans or trucks to help us move them.

Rescuing these animals will take financial resources. Donations are desperately needed as are donations of dog collars, leashes, chew toys and metal bowls, which we will bring with us.

Please contact Andy Sharkey, Deputy Director, Hopalong Animal Rescue at 510-703-6881 or email andy@hopalong.org for further information as to how you can help. Donations can be sent to Hopalong Animal Rescue, PO Box 27507, Oakland, Ca. 94602, attn. Katrina Animal Rescue Project. Help us alleviate the suffering of both the animals and their human companions.
