and DAD's Pet Care to Airlift Nearly 100 Homeless Pets to Safety
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- As Hurricane Rita threatens the Gulf Coast, North Shore Animal League America and DAD's Pet Care have joined forces to airlift close to 100 animals rescued from shelters wrecked in Hurricane Katrina.
The cats and dogs, which have been held in temporary staging areas throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, are being brought to North Shore Animal League America's headquarters in Port Washington, New York where they will be cared for in a safe environment. The animals will be airlifted on Thursday, September 22 from Baton Rouge International Airport at approximately 9:30 AM (CST) and arrive at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport at approximately 1:30 PM (ET).
"This latest storm could not have happened at a worse time for these animals," says Dr. Eve Ognibene, who has been on location for the past several weeks managing the League's emergency animal rescue efforts. "The temporary staging areas will not survive another storm. This is literally a race against time."
North Shore Animal League America was one of the first animal rescue agencies on the ground in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and has been actively placing hundreds of homeless pets rescued from shelters in safe and loving homes throughout the country.
"Groups like North Shore Animal League America have been working around the clock to save the lives of thousands of animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina," said Doug Lang, executive vice president of sales and marketing for DAD'S Pet Care. "We all need to do what we can to help and DAD'S is very pleased to be able to help evacuate these pets to safety."
Lang said that in addition to the airlift, DAD'S employees have also donated $20,000 to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
DAD'S Pet Care has been owned and operated by the Lang family in Meadville, PA since 1933. It is the oldest pet food company in the U.S. still operating under the same name and ownership. The DAD'S line of dog and cat food is currently distributed in 24 states throughout the country. More information on DAD's Pet Care can be found at http://www.dadspetcare.com/.
