London, 8 August/GNN/ -- MARITIME AND COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (274-06) issued by The Government News Network on 8 August 2006 At 21:40 last night Brixham Coastguard received a call reporting a dog lost over the cliff edge at Sharkham Point near Berry Head, Brixham.
Berry Head Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team were called out to try and rescue the five year old black Labrador, called Tyler. Several attempts were made to recover the dog, which constantly moved away as the rescuer approached.
Due to the hazardous location, at just after three o'clock this morning the decision was made to call off the rescue effort and try again at first light.
However the Coastguard received a further telephone call informing them that the owner's son-in-law had managed to get down to the dog and then onto the beach below, but was then unable to get back up the steep path, due to the dog being exhausted.
Berry Head Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team were called out again and after assessing the situation decided it was possible to rescue the dog and the man using a cliff line to return them back to the top of the cliff safely.
The same member of the cliff rescue team that had tried to recover the dog during the night managed to get the dog into a bag and then carry him on his back to safety. The man was helped back to safety by another member of the cliff rescue team.
Sean Brooks, Watch Manager, Brixham Coastguard, said:
'If your canine companion falls over a cliff edge, please do not attempt a rescue yourself, thus putting yourself in danger. We have Coastguard teams around the coast who are experts in cliff rescue and are willing and able to assist. Obviously the best solution, especially when near to cliffs, is to keep your dog on a lead.'
