A Thousand Pet Greyhounds and Their Humans to Descend on Massachusetts June 17-19 for Greyhound Adoption Expo

BOSTON and RAYNHAM, Mass., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 1,000 pet greyhounds and their owners from throughout New England and as far away as Florida and Canada are expected to attend the Greyhound Adoption Expo being held at Wonderland Greyhound Park in Revere and Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park in Raynham, Mass. June 17-19. This is the second year for this free event that provides an opportunity for people who have adopted former racing greyhounds to meet new friends, obtain valuable information about this special breed of dog, and to have fun.
"Owning a retired racing greyhound is more than just owning a pet," said Linda Jensen, organizer of the Expo. "It's really a lifestyle. Greyhound owners love to get together, swap stories and show off their greyhound family members. It also provide an opportunity for potential adopters to learn about these wonderful pets."
Expo festivities begin at 1:00 p.m. on June 17 at Wonderland Greyhound Park At 190 VFW Parkway. Those attending can participate in a Fun Run complete with videotape, a blessing of the hounds, a back on track parade and raffles. Booths featuring such things as nail clipping, ask a vet, paw painting, paw reading and greyhound fortunes will be open all afternoon. Adoptive owners are given the opportunity to meet their racers former handlers and learn more about their pet's life as a racer. A greyhound fashion show with the theme of Hollywood Stars will precede a buffet dinner. There will be speakers on a variety of subjects including the history of the Greyhound Hall of Fame by Ed Scheele and Greyhound Adoptions: Past, Present, and Future by Cynthia Branigan. Shirley Smith, President of Greyhound Rescue of Quebec, will discuss her week as a kennel helper.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on June 18 at Raynham Park, located at 1958 Broadway, Ed Sheele will speak on the new greyhound pet exhibit at the Greyhound Hall of Fame. Cynthia Branigan will addresses the topic "Devil Dogs: Taming the Twin Demons of Aggression and Anxiety" followed by Laura Pike, foster co-coordinator for Buffalo Greyhound Adoption will expound on her week as a kennel helper. A greyhound fashion show with the theme of crazy hazy days of summer will follow the barbeque lunch. In addition, greyhound owners can tour the paddock, take part in a special ice cream social featuring songs by request for a donation to Ct Greyhound Placement, and a memorial service. The back on track parade and blessing of the hounds will occur during the afternoon race card. Vendors selling greyhound merchandise will be on-hand all day with the latest collectables. Many local adoption groups will have booths with greyhounds available for adoption.
The final event begins at 8:30 a.m. on June 19 at Borderland State Park and features a poker walk where participants are dealt a hand of five cards. While strolling through the exquisite grounds of the park, the participants chat with new friends and old, trading cards. The walker with the best hand at the end of the walk is awarded an Expo prize package provided by the Greyhound Walking Club of Central New York.
People who are interested in adopting a greyhound also are invited to attend any of the events over the weekend. It is a great way for people to learn more about greyhounds and what wonderful pets they make.
