First Week of May Dedicated to Animal Friends
SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- National Pet Week is May 1-7, and the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) encourages pet owners to check up on the health, safety, and lifestyle of the animals in their lives. This week-long national focus was established in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association and its auxiliary to promote responsible pet ownership and further understanding of the intrinsic role veterinarians play in the human-animal bond.
In 2005, National Pet Week continues to raise awareness of the proper care, protection, and attention pets deserve with veterinary clinic open houses, local education programs, and in-school promotions throughout California. "We've encourage our members to bring special presentations and materials into classrooms during National Pet Week," says CVMA President Jon Klingborg, DVM. "CVMA programs help children understand the responsibilities of pet ownership as well as the important relationship between a pet and its veterinarian."
This year's National Pet Week theme, PETS.LOVE@TLC, emphasizes both the caring and caretaking things we can do for our animal friends:
-- Provide regular health care as recommended by your veterinarian.
-- Ensure your pets are identified and safe through I.D. tags, microchips,
or other means.
-- To help control the animal population, have your pets spayed and
neutered.
-- When choosing a new pet, learn about and carefully select an animal
suited for your home and lifestyle.
-- Educate yourself about local pet laws and ordinances, including
licensing and leash requirements.
-- Explore and find the right diet and foods for your pet. Like humans,
animals each have different needs.
-- Keep the environment for your pets safe and pleasant and give them
plenty of attention, exercise, and companionship.
National Pet Week is a great opportunity to assess life with your pets. Does the dog require a little more exercise, the cat a new identity tag, or the rabbit a healthier food? When was the last time your animal saw a veterinarian for a well-pet check up and immunization update? "Your veterinarian provides quality care throughout your pet's life," emphasizes Klingborg. "The best way to return your animal's devotion is by protecting its health."
