Program passes one million adoption milestone in seven years
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Iams Company and Helen Woodward Animal Center announced today that 328,777 pets are enjoying the New Year with their new families thanks to the Iams Home 4 the Holidays adoption campaign. This year's international campaign broke its own record for adoptions, set just last year.
A cat -- who undoubtedly earned his new name of "Lucky" -- entered the Kirkham Kattery Rescue in Milton, Fla., after a harrowing 60-mile journey from Mobile, Ala., inside a car's engine compartment. He was homeless and facing an uncertain future. In December, he went home a celebrity -- the one-millionth pet adopted during the Iams Home 4 the Holidays program.
This year's success is shared with the more than 1,900 shelters and rescue groups worldwide that partnered with Iams and Helen Woodward Animal Center to take this program to unprecedented heights. During the eight-week campaign -- held between Nov. 7, 2005 and Jan. 2, 2006 -- a total of 160,958 cats, 147,087 dogs, and 20,732 other pets (rabbits, snakes, birds, etc.) found homes as a result of the campaign. The program has set the 2006 program goal at 375,000 adopted pets.
"This year was special because we had thousands more animals who needed good homes after surviving the Gulf Coast hurricanes," said Mike Arms, President of Helen Woodward Animal Center and founder of Iams Home 4 the Holidays.
Home 4 the Holidays began in 1999 when 14 San Diego area shelters found homes for 2,563 orphaned pets.
"Everyone here at Iams is excited and proud to see the difference this program makes in the lives of so many pets and their families," said Kelly Vanasse, The Iams Company. "We're encouraged to see the growing interest in finding homes for orphaned pets. It's a great start to a lifetime of health, happiness, and love for both pets and families."
A Web site and toll-free registration number already are in place for groups to sign-up to participate in the eighth annual campaign, which kicks off Nov. 6, 2006. Shelters, rescue groups and other organizations can complete the registration form for the 2006 campaign online at http://www.home4theholidays.org/, or by calling (800) 566-5038.
